Judith (Judy) Ann (Speers) Lanigan a retired nurse, devoted mother and grandmother, went home to meet our Lord on Saturday, June 24, 2017 after battling colon cancer for the last nine months.
Judy began her career as a nurse at Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and went on to care and serve in hospitals, doctor offices and nursing homes in Baltimore, Harford and Cecil Counties.
Judy had a servant’s heart. She served as an enthusiastic volunteer at West Nottingham Presbyterian Church, leading the Thanksgiving Dinner each year, Wednesday night dinners, and serving multiple terms on the church leadership body, the Session.
Judy loved traveling to see her children, and spending time with family in Florida. During retirement, she and her husband John spent winters cruising with family members in the Caribbean and on the Panama Canal.
Judy was quietly and humbly creative, spending time knitting blankets for her grandchildren, and others in need; as well as designing and planting beautiful gardens throughout her yard. Her green thumb provided countless years of enjoyment and beauty for her family.
Judy was tirelessly dedicated to her family, and is survived by daughter Cara Lanigan and husband Bradley Lanigan of El Paso, Texas; daughter Jennifer Permar and husband Gregory Permar of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania; daughter Nicole Markuski and husband Victor Markuski of Edgewater, Maryland; daughter Joan Lanigan of Boston, Massachusetts; son John Lanigan, III of Port Deposit, Maryland; sister Wendy (Speers) Schuck and brother Preston Speers; 6 grandchildren: Nathaniel, James and Nora Lanigan; and Sam, Ben and Parker Permar; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Judy is preceded in death by her husband John Lanigan, Jr., her mother and father Joan and Wallace C. Speers; and daughter Kathleen Lanigan.
A celebration of Judy’s life will be held at 11am on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at West Nottingham Presbyterian Church, 1195 Firetower Road, Colora, MD 21917, with a visitation beginning at 10am. Burial will follow the service at West Nottingham Presbyterian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to the Senator Bob Hooper House sent in care of R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., PO Box 248, Rising Sun, MD 21911.
