Joyce Edith Smith, age 66, of Pelion, SC passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2024. She was born in Havre De Grace, MD on April 7, 1958 to the late Roy Thompson and Joyce Edith (Kelly) Thompson.

Joyce was a huge Elvis Presley fan and enjoyed listening to all of his music. Her family was her greatest joy, especially her grandchildren. Joyce will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Joyce is survived by her son, Richard Carnell, Jr. of Mooresville, MD; daughter, Cheri Balagot and her husband, Ritche of Belcamp, MD; five grandchildren: Anna Crowl, Raina Balagot, Ramiro Balagot, Willa Carnell, and Raven Carnell; companion, Richard Carnell, Sr. of Pelion, SC; five brothers: Dennis Thompson of Port Deposit, MD, Francis Thompson of Port Deposit, MD, Bryan Thompson of Port Deposit, MD, Bobby Thompson of Port Deposit, MD, and David Thompson of Port Deposit, MD; four sisters: Peggy Spencer of Havre De Grace, MD, Sue Bittle of Port Deposit, MD, Ruthy Reynolds of Port Deposit, MD, and Betty Snow of Port Deposit, MD.

In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Thompson.

A life celebration will be held at a later date.

Memories of my sister include always calling her Girl. My mom said our older brother named her Girl because he was a boy and thought her name was girl. Girl and I were always together growing up. We played barbies and made a real neat fort and pretended we were married to Davey Jones and Mickey Dolenz, from the pop group, "The Monkees". She was my best friend and my sidekick growing up. I always looked up to her as a child and we went to church together with Our Mother and Grandmother. We had so much fun with our grandmother. I cherish the memories I have of her, and I will continue to pray for Cheri, Ricky and all she leaves behind. Love Always!

Mama, so much of my childhood was spent at your house, watching soaps and playing in leaves. When I reached adulthood I did not visit you enough which I regret but I hope you know that I've always loved you so much and I am so grateful that I had 28 years with you!

Mama, even though we didn’t spend nearly enough time together, our memories will always hold a special place in my heart. There’s nothing more enduring than a grandmothers love. Sleep peacefully Mama.
