Josephine “Jo” Elizabeth (Eder) Jugler, 98, passed away quietly at her home in Rising Sun, MD on May 22, 2021. She was born at home in Elkton, MD on January 30, 1923, the daughter of Harry & Elizabeth (Angle) Eder. A graduate of Elkton High School, she worked a number of clerical jobs including at the Triumph Munitions plant, Chrysler and Union Hospital, where she met the love of her life, Robert “Bob” N Jugler, “a gawky looking farmer” as she commented to a co-worker. In 1950, they married and she moved to the Jugler family farm near Rising Sun. In 1955 the family moved to a new home just across the field within site of the family farm, where she lived for the remainder of her life.
A loving mother of 5 children, Jo was a homemaker for a number of years until she returned to the workforce in the early 70’s as a school bus driver. She drove bus #20 for almost 20 years, spanning 2 generations of students, including 2 of her daughters-in-law. One of her greatest joys in her life was to encounter a former rider and getting a big hug, this explains her extended shopping times at Martin’s. After her retirement, she volunteered at the library every weekly.
A devoted Catholic, Jo attended Mass at St. Agnes Chapel until she could no longer make it into the church and then watched services daily on TV. She supported the church in as many ways as possible, her cream puffs were a favorite with the bingo players. She was a founding member of the Rising Sun Community Center, starting as a PTA representative and then serving as Secretary until the center was turned over to the county. Her involvement ranged from delivering concrete for building footers to traveling to the state Capital to apply for grants. She was a longtime fixture at the polls as she served as an election judge for many years.
Jo loved to reminisce about growing up in Elkton, particularly while living on “South Street”. As a child raised during the great Depression, she was extremely frugal, believing that almost everything should be saved, reused or recycled as much as possible. Recycling was a passion to her and a woe to anyone who threw a plastic container in her trashcan.
