Gloria Hope Payne
August 29, 1950- January 26, 2023
“Gloria” to many, “Hope” to most, age 72, passed away peacefully at her home in Newark, Delaware, on January 26, 2023. She will be remembered by all as an energetic, helpful, and loving sister, doting aunt, and friend.
Gloria Hope was born on August 29, 1950, in Philadelphia to Ada and Jim Payne. She was preceded in death by many and is survived by siblings, Arlene Gray, Ronald (Kim) Payne and Allen (Diane) Payne along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
A 1968 graduate from Claymont High School, she later attended the University of Delaware. After a long career at Bell Atlantic in Wilmington, DE, she worked in the medical field as an office administrator and marketing manager. Over many years, Gloria also enjoyed hosting numerous international exchange students attending the University of Delaware and counted it a privilege to interact with and learn from each student, making them a part of her family.
After moving to Newark in 2003, Gloria energetically became active in her community association and soon became the president of her HOA. She approached her responsibilities with enthusiasm and strove to make the community better. This expanded into eventually being asked to run for Delaware State representative in her district. She envisioned a brighter future for her surrounding community, district, and state.
She will be loved and missed by all whose lives have been touched by her kindness and free spirit. These qualities caused Hope to refer to herself as Auntie Mame, and she would want to remind each of you that “life is a banquet” and to always live life to its fullest.
A celebration of Gloria Hope Payne’s life will be held on March 18, 2023, at Chi United Church in Upper Chichester, PA. Visitation will be held from 10-11am with the service to follow at 11am.
In lieu of flowers, a donation in Gloria Hope Payne’s name may be made to the Arthritis Foundation in support of Gloria’s daily struggle with rheumatoid arthritis and the hope that one day improved supportive treatment will be available.
