George T. Cavanaugh, Sr., 85, of Newark, DE, passed away September 27, 2014 at home.
Born in Akron, OH on November 1, 1928, George was the eldest son of the late Thomas J and Marie “Rita” Cavanaugh. The family moved to Nanty Glo Pa, when George was a child. George graduated from High School in 1946 and enlisted in the US Navy. After being discharged, he attended St. Francis College in Loretto, PA.
George worked in the steel mills of PA and sold insurance for Monumental Life before joining Chrysler Corp. He retired from Chrysler in 1987.
He was an avid golfer, enjoyed pinochle, ping pong, crosswords puzzles and bowling. He coached his son George Jr in the Newark National Little League as manager of the Giants. He continued to manage the team even after his son had moved up to the Babe Ruth League.
George is survived by his wife of 64 years, E. Dolores Cavanaugh; sons George T. Cavanaugh (Linda), Mark Cavanaugh (Katherine) a daughter Patty Avery (Bob), all of Newark. 4 grandchildren, Mike Cavanaugh, Michelle Dean (Ed), Marie Cavanaugh and Rob Avery (Carrie). 5 great grandchildren, Tyler, Ashley, Amber, Ryleah, and Shepard; 6 brothers, Joe, Paul, James, Jerry, Mike and Dan Cavanaugh; and 2 sisters, Maryann Mort and Ellen Merlo.
The family is grateful for the support and care given by the Visiting Nurses Association of Christiana Hospital and Seasons Hospice.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church, 15 Gender Rd., Newark DE 19713 on Friday October 3, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation at R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc., 122 West Main St., Newark, DE 19711 on Thursday October 2 from 6 – 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Seasons Hospice or the Newark National Little League and mailed to the funeral home.
