George Samuel Dougherty, age 81, a cherished resident of Newark, Delaware, transitioned from this life on May 14, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter. Born on September 9, 1942, in Wilmington, Delaware, he was the beloved son of the late George Sakers Dougherty and Esther Rebecca Dougherty (née Hindes). George was the devoted husband of Jowain Dougherty (née Reasin), sharing 24 beautiful years of companionship and unwavering support.
Having dedicated himself to service, George exemplified patriotism and commitment. He honorably served his country for four years in the United States Marine Corps, followed by an additional 19 years of devoted service in the Delaware National Guard. A lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary Post 475, George’s dedication to his fellow veterans was unwavering.
Professionally, George’s meticulous nature and dedication shone through during his 35-year tenure at the Chrysler Corporation as a Quality Control Inspector. His dedication to excellence left an indelible mark on his colleagues and the company.
Beyond his professional endeavors, George embraced life’s joys with enthusiasm. In his youth, he found delight in travel and the open sea, often embarking on adventurous cruises. Later in life, he found comfort in the simple pleasures, enjoying leisurely moments watching the Hallmark Channel and engaging in spirited games of Solitaire.
George’s wit and humor endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. His quick wit and infectious laughter brought joy to countless lives, leaving a lasting imprint of warmth and kindness.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his brothers, Willard and William Dougherty. He is survived by his devoted wife, Jowain Dougherty, his daughters Linda Hewes (Mark), Esther Dougherty, and Delores Davis (Wade), seven cherished grandchildren, five beloved great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A celebration of George’s life will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery – 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, Delaware. In lieu of flowers, contributions in George’s memory may be made to VFW Post 475, honoring his lifelong commitment to service and camaraderie.
