Frederick (Rick) Warren Van Name, III, P.E., 69, suddenly passed away on December 20, 2015 in Newark, Delaware. Born in Torrington, CT, he was the son of the late Dr. Frederick Warren Van Name Jr. and Barbara Francis Leaper Van Name.
Rick graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Delaware Center for Composite Materials.
Rick owned his own business, Engineer Consultant, LLC, and was a registered Professional Engineer in sixteen jurisdictions in the United States. Since 1991, he was an Engineering Consultant involved with Structural Design and Analysis and was regularly called to testify as an expert witness specializing in Laminated and Composite Materials. Rick previously worked for MortonThiokol and Composites USA.
Throughout his professional career, Rick received many honors and commendations. He was the author of many patents relating to Composite Material and Design and Fabrication Techniques. He was an elected member of ASME-RTP-1 Design and Fabrication Committee and other professional organizations, including ASTM, SAMPE and ASCE Societies.
His hobbies included golf, shooting pool and watching sports programs on TV.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his brother Ted (Donna), his sister Pat (Libby), his niece Carly McCormick (Sean), his great niece and nephew Madeline and Jack McCormick, and his longtime companion, Laura Booth.
