Evelyn May Roberts, (née Frank); passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, one day after her 94th birthday, in Newark, DE. Born in Baltimore, MD, she was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, who loved music, dance, and gardening.
Evelyn participated in many amateur dance competitions, and always did well – having the trophies to prove it. Her lifelong love of music was clear. She learned to play the piano at a young age, and as a teenager fantasized about being a concert pianist with the stage name “Eve Lyn”. She sang in church choirs, and often had music playing in the background of her home. Her dedication to encouraging her son’s musical ambitions was remarkable, as she allowed several of his bands to practice in her basement – without complaint or criticism. For this alone, she deserves a special place in Heaven!
She possessed a good sense of humor, and tried to help brighten the lives of those around her. She also enjoyed reading about psychology, philosophy, and religion (all kinds), and would like to engage in discussions on the subjects. She was a longtime member in a local fitness club, and participated up into her late 80’s.
Among other jobs, Evelyn worked as an executive secretary at the University of Delaware for over 20 years. She also rented rooms to the U of D students who were enrolled in the English Language Institute, as well as graduate students. She enjoyed the experience of getting in touch with other cultures and talking with people with a wide variety of experiences.
Evelyn is predeceased by her parents, Raymond Guilford Frank and Bessie May Gernand Frank.
She is survived by her son, Steven; daughter-in –law, Kathy; grandson Eno, and his wife, Michelle; two cherished great granddaughters, Emma Paige and Avery Grace; her sister, Jean Marie Burton; niece Phyllis, and nephew Doug.
Evelyn was a good person. If that could be said of everyone at the end of their lives, the world would be a better place.
Evelyn’s family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Brookdale at White Chapel, who displayed kindness and affection in caring for and helping her for the last three years. The family also thanks the dedicated staff at Compassionate Care Hospice who truly helped make a difficult time much easier for Evelyn and her family.
