Carole Joan Westerman, age 88, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, December 1, 2025. She was born on October 20, 1937, in Philadelphia, PA to the late Albert John Westerman, Jr. and Melva Grace (Kuhn) Westerman.
Carole was a devoted educator, dedicated professional, and passionate adventurer. A lifelong learner, Carole earned her B.A. degree from Bucknell University in 1959, followed by a Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1963, and later, a Doctor of Education from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973. With a heart for service and a deep commitment to helping others, Carole worked as a counseling psychologist for the Veterans Administration from 1987 until her retirement in 2004. Her work made a lasting impact on countless individuals, and she was known for her compassionate and empathetic approach.
Outside of her professional life, Carole was an avid boater and a true lover of the Chesapeake Bay. She spent many joyful years navigating its waters, exploring its beauty, and connecting with fellow boating enthusiasts. Carole was deeply involved in the United States Power Squadron, where she served as Commander for several years. She was passionate about sharing her knowledge of boating and teaching others through her involvement in the squadron’s educational programs.
Carole’s love of travel also took her around the world, including a memorable trip to China with the People-to-People Program. She had a great appreciation for cultural exchange and enjoyed connecting with people from diverse backgrounds.
Among her many passions, Carole was especially fond of The Sound of Music, a film that she cherished throughout her life. She also adored her two Bichon Frises, Chessie and Peake, who were her constant companions and brought her much joy and comfort.
Carole is survived by her sister, Linda Roberson and her husband, Alvin; nieces: Debbie Roberson Supplee and her husband, Tim, and Lisa Roberson Hatfield; great-nieces: Camille Supplee, Abby Supplee, Aneige Fisher and her husband, John, and Emily Hatfield; and great great-nephew, Carter Fisher. In addition to her parents, Carole is preceded in death by her nephew, David Roberson, and two dogs, Chessie and Peake.
A celebration of life will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025, at 2:00PM at R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc., 122 West Main Street Newark, DE 19711, where friends and family may begin visiting at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made payable to “Chesapeake Bay Foundation” and sent in care of R.T. Foard & Jones, Inc.
