Anne Wight MacMillan Thomson passed away at Christiana Care in Newark, DE with her family by her side on December 7, 2025. She was born in a suburb of Paris, France to Sylvia Atwater and Frederick MacMillan. She is survived by her children: John Thomson, Carol Slowik (Robert), Billy Thomson, Gordon Thomson, and Richard Thomson; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William A. Thomson and brother Chris Bothe.
She spent her early years in Tarrytown, NY, Chadds Ford, PA, and Baltimore, MD. She graduated from West Chester High School in 1947 and the University of Delaware in 1968. Anne had a beautiful life filled with family, close bridge-playing friends, and many travels, which were accentuated by her five trips across the country in one of her several VW campers of various vintages, always accompanied by family and friends. She was inducted into the Delaware Track and Field Hall of Fame in 2010 for her many years as a timer, finish line coordinator, and recorder of finish for State of Delaware high school and college meets, and championships for more than 35 years. She was a first-place timer for the prestigious Penn Relays starting in 1975, having been asked by meet director, Jim Tuppeny to be the first woman official at that meet. Also, in 2010 she and her family were recognized with the Henry Steinbrenner Family Award for multi-generational loyalty and service to the Penn Relay Carnival.
Anne was always a rock of patience and calm demeanor and the person family turned to for an answer, good advice or just general good humor. She will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Anne always enjoyed saying that when someone dies, they are not dead, as long as someone remembers them. And when there is no one left to remember, then we are all together again. The family would like to thank Aging in Place, Brookdale and Accent Care Hospice for providing excellent care and compassion for Anne at the end of her life.
A celebration of Anne’s life will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026 at 7:00 pm at R.T. Foard and Jones, Inc. 122 West Main Street, Newark, DE 19711. Family and friends may attend the visitation beginning at 6:00 pm. Burial at DE Veterans Memorial Cemetery will follow on Thursday, January 15 at 2:00 pm, and privately at Atwater family section of Brandywine Baptist Church in Chadds Ford, PA. She had a great life filled with friends, family, and achievement.
