Allen E. Smith

Allen E. Smith, 94, passed away peacefully on March 4, 2023. Allen was born in West Chester, PA, and moved to Newark, DE at age eight, where he lived for 86 years. He is survived by his two brothers, Sam and John, son, Gary (David), daughter, Nancy (Paula), daughter-in-law, Lisa, seven grandchildren, (Kristen (Bill), Kathryn, Elizabeth, A.J., Jack, Mackenzie, and Madison), and great-grandchild, Liam. Allen is predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Shirley Ritchie Smith, and son, Jeff.

Allen graduated from Newark High School in 1946 and started working with the Farmers Trust Co. shortly after, retiring as a vice president with Wilmington Trust Company after 46 years of service. He was a past president of the Newark Country Club and Newark Anglers Association (Sunset Lake), a director of the Tobin Foundation, a board member of the Newark Senior Center, a City of Newark Councilmember, and a lifetime member and past director of Aetna Hose Hook & Ladder Company.

An avid UD and Philadelphia sports fan, Allen spent many summers at Pot-Nets fishing and crabbing with family and good friends. He also enjoyed playing golf, gardening, reading, and making his own fishing rods and “Smitty” rigs.

A private graveside service will be held, and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the “Newark United Methodist Church” and sent in care of R.T. Foard & Jones Funeral Home, 122 W. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711.
